Organize Your Electronic Essentials Properly

Organize Your Electronic Essentials Properly

It is amazing how many electronics we use for business, home, and entertainment purposes on a daily basis. From smart phones and tablets to home computers and gaming systems, there is an abundance of cords and electronic clutter in our homes and workspaces, right? This season use these easy steps to get your home in sync with your electronic lifestyle —whether you just bought new tech gadgets or your current entertainment area and home office are getting out of control.

Most families don’t know how many gadgets they actually have because they’ve never taken stock. Starting with the kids’ electronics and gaming devices and finishing with your mobile lifestyle electronics, there are several ways to assess exactly what you use and what you don’t. First, determine what devices you use on a daily basis and which ones have become obsolete. Ask yourself why you are hanging on to a first generation smart phone or tablet. The same question should be asked of your teenagers and little ones. Second, dispose of what you don’t use anymore. There are many refurbishing and buyback electronic device locations in your city that will purchase your devices. Even if your items are in disrepair, these locations could offer you discounts on future purchases in exchange for your gadgets. These locations also can properly dispose of unusable batteries in your devices that could be hazardous if thrown away with your household trash.

Try to adopt the habit of putting labels on new devices the moment you take them out of their boxes. Visit your favorite office supply store or go online and search “cord management supplies”. You will find a host of colored plastic ties, labels, and even colored device cords to match cords to their corresponding devices and to minimize confusion. This can also come in handy when traveling, as you can quickly identify what cords belong to your MP3 player versus your laptop and smart phone! If you’d like to save money, why not use colorful office file tabs instead? Label them and wrap them around each cord. This method can still help you stay organized without requiring you to find extra supplies.

Once you have determined what cords belong with what devices, it’s time to get a handle on storing your electronics. For many homes, a big basket or bin in the family room houses the gaming system, controllers, and games. Not only does this make for a cluttered space, but also you could be damaging the cords or scratching the game discs and shortening the lives of many of your accessories. Similar to your cords and devices, determine if you and your family use all of the controllers, games, and accessories. Consider taking your slightly used gaming items to a local game store to trade in, sell, or donate. Look to a piece of furniture or entertainment center to neatly store games and CDs and line them up like a bookshelf. Multifunctional furniture such as movable ottomans with lift-top access can store controllers. For the youngest members of your family, consider clear plastic drawers to house accessories and label them for easy cleanup.

This season, if you love your electronic lifestyle but don’t care for the disorganization it is leaving in your home, look to these helpful tips. From sorting through and donating the unused items to staying on top of cord management your home office and family room, your home will become a more pleasant space to live in. Once you have decluttered the physical presence of electronic devices, it will be time to move to your e-mail inbox and get organized in the virtual world too!
